If a picture is worth a thousand words, a clear image of diaconal identity can provide a compelling source of reflection on our call. In this course, we will explore four different images or metaphors: a servant, a bridge, a door, and an interpreter or agent. We’ll examine each of these images in turn, including some variations, and listen to how they resonate for each of us. As a class, we will discuss how these images may already shape and inform our understanding of what a deacon is and does, or how they might begin to.

We’ll take a deeper dive into the last image, that of an interpreter, which recalls part of the examination from our ordination liturgy. “You are to interpret to the church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world.” We will reflect on what we are each perceiving in these categories lately and how we’re attempting to interpret it to the church, on the local and/or wider levels.

This course is designated for vocational deacons only.
